This is my final blog post on Simple Musings. Thanks to all of you who made this blog something that was worth pursuing! And I hope you'll do me the honor of visiting my new blog.

And with the poll closed.... I guess I should summarize the results.

For those of you who didn't know:

Powerful Words

This post is a long time coming...

When he first penned The Book Thief, Marcus Zusak could not have known the phenomenon it would become. Set in Nazi Germany during World War II, Zusak’s novel is tragic, yet it should be cherished. While The Book Thief deals with hardship and heartache, it does so with sensitivity and insight. Zusak’s protagonist, Liesel Meminger, is a young girl whose life is changing. Her parents were communists, and they were taken away from her. While traveling on a train to her foster parents, her brother died. During the course of the novel, her foster parents hide a Jew. Max Vandenburg and Liesel establish a friendship. Adapting to her new life, she develops a need for words. Liesel longs to read; her longing translates into book thievery. In Liesel’s world, these words become very important. Liesel’s story is hard. It is not light; it is not fluffy. It is arduous. With every page, the reader is reminded of the grievous effects of World War II. It is then very appropriate that Death narrates Liesel’s tale.

Liesel’s tale is universal. While Zusak may have written The Book Thief for young adults, adults can enjoy this heartwarming story too. In fact, adults may appreciate it more. Middle-school readers may find The Book Thief too disturbing; the fear and violence may be inappropriate for young children. However, high-school students can (and should) read about Nazis Germany. Markus Zusak’s story may be the perfect combination of a history and literature study for these students. Young women may prefer to read The Book Thief more than young men because of a female protagonist. Though, these same young men may identify with Rudy or Max. As an adult reader, I loved The Book Thief. Initially, I found it hard to warm up to. However, given the chance, The Book Thief charmed me. I am almost sorry that I had never read it before; The Book Thief would have been the perfect addition to my homeschool curriculum.

The Book Thief deals with the bombing of Germany, the Holocaust, and lots of death. While it is terribly tragic, The Book Thief is very moving. Zusak’s prose is dynamic and effective. I cannot help but agree with Max, “The best word shakers were the ones who understood the true power of words” (445). Understanding the power of words is a lesson we should all learn whether young adults or not.

Ok. So, I'm pretty sure I've made that decision. Right now, my plan is to finish this blog... Wrapping up old drafts... etc. Therefore, over the next few days, you'll see some randomly generated posts. :) Hopefully, they will keep you entertained until the next phase...

A move to a new blog! Yay! Where I've be downsizing my photos from now on. :P Eventually, I'll have a poll along side here somewhere, and I'll be asking for your help picking a new blog title. Thanks for all your input!

Hmph. Well, Google informs me that I've used all of my storage space. So, I need to make a decision about my blog. And here are my current options:

A) Continue my current blog without anymore pictures.
B) Pay for more storage space
C) Start a new blog
D) Discontinue blogging entirely

I'll be praying and considering carefully my options... I do enjoy blogging. And, it gives me an outlet to write and think, but is it the best use of my time? "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are profitable." 1 Cor. 6:12a

Of Cap Guns and HiHo Cherry-O!

While at the Berry's this week, I learned all about cap guns. Who knew that they don't actually shoot anything? Just a little burning smell, after the gun powder ignites. Hmm. In the long run, I think these kids may teach me more than I teach them.

And in other news, we worked on our geography... And I told the kids my trick for when I had to memorize which states were which... I think Maine looks like a dog, New Hampshire looks like a queen, and Massachusetts looks like a gun. :O)

OSB's Céilidh Part 2

Where did I leave off? Oh yes...

So, the guests began to arrive... and the girls and I became busy handing out the dance cards.

Meanwhile, the fellowship began...

It was wonderful to see so many of our friends! And in such fabulous costumes!

A "Pleasing Countenance" is a must at a Céilidh. And happy, contented faces are great for photos. :O)

And as previously mentioned, any excuse will do for a family photo!

Unfortunately, I don't have any photos of the entire Kincell family. Bummer. But, I do have a picture of Mr. Kincell to share. He always does magnificent job as the Master of Ceremonies! And isn't Mr. Kincell's costume the best? It certainly has challenged me to make an excellent costume for my daddy.

Speaking of my daddy, he gave the etiquette speech and short devotional again at this ball. In my biased opinion, he does a great job!

A Céilidh should be... Green?

Even though the ball was almost 3 weeks ago (GASP!), I'm finally blogging about it. Hopefully, my readers will be gracious? :P

I always start my blog posts with one about decorations... and while I don't think tradition should be kept for tradition's sake, good traditions are worth preserving...

Planning a ball is almost as fun as the balls themselves. And one of our important questions is decor. What color should a Céilidh be? Considering the word has Gaelic and Celtic origins, green is the natural color.

But what would a ball in the autumn season be without some fall colors? I love those little pumpkins. :)

So, before our guests arrived, the Kincells and Powells set to work transforming the room into a ball room.

And the green and autumnal color palette came together beautifully, if I do say so myself.

Mrs. Kincell did a lovely job, as usual, on the food table.

And I love this new platter. It's weird to share a picture of it on the blog, but I couldn't resist.

While we set up, we take as many pictures as possible. A ball MUST BE DOCUMENTED! *grins*

As I sit in my room listening to country music, the house begins to grow steadily quieter. My family has either headed to bed or is moving in that direction. I like this quiet time of the night more than I should as it makes the early morning seem like a curse rather than a blessing. But, my mind is still awake. Thinking. Pondering. Musing. Brooding. Contemplating. Etcetera. Etcetera. Etcetera.

The Sabbath was restful. And yet, convicting. Thus begins my thoughtful vigil.

Today was another day in the Worldview Study. As we discussed the orthodox views of creation, blogging entered the conversation. My dad reminded the group that it is not appropriate to insult, degrade, or bash our brothers online. He offered that the internet is a great tool, but we should be careful in its use. This evening, while I listen to John Mayer (yes, I've moved on from country...), I realize that I've failed. While I should always speak the truth, I need to speak it in love. I should THINK before I speak... Are my words True? Are my words Helpful? Are my words Inspiring? Are my words Necessary? Are my words Kind? My sin gets in the way. I may speak the truth, but do my words pass the other litmus tests? Therefore I stand (er, sit?) before you, my eleven readers, and apologize for any instance of inappropriate words. It is one of my greatest desires to inspire discussion; however, I never wish it to become an argument or a fight. If it does than I have failed, and this blog is useless. Therefore, if my words have ever caused discord, I apologize and repent.

On the main page of my blog, James 1:19 is written for my reminder, "This you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger."By God's grace, His hand will cover my mouth.

On the same theme, it is my confession that great communication is not my strength. I strive for it, but I don't always make it there. And I like to tease. Combine the two, and you've got quite the interesting bag. To my other friends who like to tease, we'll endeavor to laugh together and not be insulted. :O)

A Parental Rights Rally

Supporting the Parental Rights Amendment is a conviction that many friends of mine share. The Kincell family hosted a rally meant to inform about the issue and strengthen this conviction.

In my humble opinion, it went really well!

Local politicians came and spoke regarding the issue...

And Will Estrada gave an excellent lecture about the threats to parental rights, what we can do, and the importance of a parental rights amendment. For more information, see http://parentalrights.org/.

It was great to see so many friends and new faces.

Especially, kids and young teens. I'm so grateful that they are interested in this issue!

What about Courtship?

So, I've really neglected this area of my life recently. With hospitality, responsibility, ballishness, and planning/organizing other events, I've been swamped. :) But, by God's grace, this blog should have a lot of updates in November...

Due to several conversations lately, courtship has been on my mind. I'm not doubting my decision or principles, but how would I explain them? How would I promote them? How would I defend them? How would I describe courtship to others?

But, before I deal with courtship, I should say... I know many people who have dated in the past and this post should NOT reflect on them at all. Some of my favorite people in the world have dated, and they are still some of my favorite people. I want to deal with courtship and dating as institutions... not specific examples. Oh, and by the way, many people I know have used some of these principles and called it something other than courtship... such as "dating." :) I'm not attached to the name "courtship." So, "a rose by any other name would smell as sweet."

Ok. Moving on...

While deciding on how to present courtship, I asked myself --> Why do I believe in courtship? Why do I want to commit to such these principles?

My reasons fit into 3 categories. 3 categories I would call "the 3 Pillars of Courtship."

Protection
Accountability
Purpose

Protection:
When two people become involved, hearts strings are easily entangled. In the early stages of a relationship, this is unfortunate. These attachments can cloud good judgments. In courtship, the young man would ask the girl's father for permission. Fathers are a third-party; they are naturally more objective than either the young men or young women. He can help protect both of their heart strings from becoming prematurely attached.

Accountability:
Responsibility is important for any relationship -- especially a boy/girl relationship. Hanging out with the families keep young people accountable. (My previous Pastor always suggested group activities as a good alternative to one-on-one.) Young men and women are answerable to their parents. In matters of the heart, the rules can become fuzzy. Parents can still see the lines when young people cannot. The Bible tells us to "flee temptation." What better way to flee than to have parental accountability?

Purpose:
The goal of courtship is marriage. This is not to imply that if there are problems, the courtship will not end. However, courtship looks forward to marriage -- not temporary personal gratification. The dating institution contributes to an already prevalent, societal problem: Self worship. Young people, who are not ready for marriage, are in "relationships." By pursing these relationships, they're having "fun." Self-gratification becomes the goal. Contrary to the biblical model of dying-to-self, these relationships promote how "I" feel and what "I" want. In a courtship, the intent, if everything goes well, is marriage.

These 3 tenets are the core of my reasons for believing in courtship as a good principle. While not exhaustive, it does represent my current thinking on the subject... Your thoughts?

Jim and Cindy were kind enough to let their children come with Daniel and me to walk in the Homecoming Parade. West Virginians for Life has a group every year, and the kids (and I!) were excited to participate.

After waiting for the parade to start (and the kids listening to my instruction -- you aren't allowed to throw candy anymore...) we marched down the street. Smiling and walking all the way.

Weekend Women's Retreat

Several weekends ago, I had the great pleasure of attending the Presbytery of Ohio's Women's retreat. And it was such a blessing! It was relaxing, convicting, and encouraging.

Although I did get carsick, the trip was enjoyable. The wisdom of the older women with me was amazing. Opportunities to ask questions and to listen to their stories were precious.

When we arrived the camp, the beauty of God's creation struck me anew... so we went on a short walk before our sessions began...

Mrs. Tara Barthel with Peacemaker Ministries was an impressive speaker. Funny, articulate, and smooth, she would make you laugh and convict you within moments. But, Tara was quick to remind us that we don't start with our work. We start with what God has done for us. We start with the indicative --> what Christ has done for us and who we are.... and then move on to the imperative ---> God's commands and how we should live.

After the dance practice, my family and I headed to the Spring Festival. Whoot whoot! And enjoyed a nice meal together. A dance practice and a festival - all in one day. Too much excitement.

God has given many so many blessings. Not the least of these are a wonderful family, a supportive church, and excellent friends. Thank you, Lord.

We have begun our foray into the Biology section of the Understanding the Times study. The textbook is encouraging and helpful. With that in mind, I wanted to share a quotation from the Christianity portion:

"The belief that God created all things, including men and women, in His own image requires faith. After some schedule rearranging, Cindy and I made a plan to me to visit and work with her kids on History. Though nervous (and excited), I set off praying that my time with the kids would be a blessing to them, a blessing to Cindy, and (selfishly) a blessing to myself.

And the day went beautifully! History was a blast. The lunch conversation was delightful, and the games were fun (at least for me ;).

Noah, Maggie, and I discussed colonial etiquette: "Do not invite yourself to someone's house. Do not give your advice unless asked for, then be brief." Did grammar: Their, There, or They're... And read books.

Evangelia, Jude, and I played the "PEG"gy Back game. Which is now my favorite game.

All of us played Star Wars. But, perhaps not the tradition version. There was discussion of whether Dooku's name was Darwin. :P

And I learned that pretzels are brain food. :)

Vocab for next week:

Chicken & Rice Soup with Lime

*10 c. chicken broth
*1 medium onion, chopped
*1 c. sliced celery
*1 c. sliced carrots
*1/4 c. snipped parsley
*1/2 tsp pepper
*1/2 tsp dried thyme
*1 bay leaf
*1 1/2 c. chicken cubes (approx. 3/4 lb.)
*2 cups cooked rice
*2 tbs fresh lime juice
*Lime slices for garnish

1. Combine broth, onion, celery, carrots, parsley, pepper, thyme, & bay leaf in Dutch oven.
2. Bring to a boil; stir once or twice. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered.
3. Add chicken; simmer uncovered, 5 to 10 minutes until chicken is cooked.
4. Remove bay leaf.
5. Stir in rice & lime juice just before serving.
6. Garnish w/lime slices.

Learning to Be Joyful for His Name's Sake

I’ve blogged about joy before but never like this...

It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of Sunday school… even in a time when it’s not popular in the broader Christian circles. Sunday school is a convicting, encouraging, and enlightening time for me. Learning from my elders or teaching my little ones is a blessed experience (who by-the-way, usually know the lesson before I teach it because of their covenant parents, but that's another blog post). Yesterday, the most prevalent element in the adult Sunday school was conviction.

The Larger Catechism’s explanation of the third commandment is beyond all my ideas about the Lord’s name…

Q. 113. What are the sins forbidden in the third commandment?
A. The sins forbidden in the third commandment are, the not using of God's name as is required; and the abuse of it in an ignorant, vain, irreverent, profane, superstitious, or wicked mentioning or otherwise using his titles, attributes, ordinances, or works, by blasphemy, perjury; all sinful cursings, oaths, vows, and lots; violating of our oaths and vows, if lawful; and fulfilling them, if of things unlawful; murmuring and quarreling at, curious prying into, and misapplying of God's decrees and providences; misinterpreting, misapplying, or any way perverting the word, or any part of it, to profane jests, curious or unprofitable questions, vain janglings, or the maintaining of false doctrines; abusing it, the creatures, or anything contained under the name of God, to charms, or sinful lusts and practices; the maligning, scorning, reviling, or any wise opposing of God's truth, grace, and ways; making profession of religion in hypocrisy, or for sinister ends; being ashamed of it, or a shame to it, by unconformable, unwise, unfruitful, and offensive walking, or backsliding from it.

Are you humbled yet? I was and am. The “murmuring and quarreling at” section spoke to my heart the most. Throughout my everyday existence, I am a great murmurer. (And yes, I know it’s not a word.) If there was a trophy for whining, I would win the championship. It’s nothing for which to be proud.

By whining, complaining, and wishing (for another time of life), I take the name of the Lord in vain. I profane the name by my sinful and wicked attitude. God’s sovereign providence is good, right, and holy. Who am I to question His plan? Who am I to criticize? With my attack, my disapproval, and my murmur, I place myself higher than God. I declare that I know the best "good" for my life. Therefore, I deny His word: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28

It’s not only complaining about chores, work, and calling. What about people? Do I whine about my parents? My brother? My grandfather? My church? Yes. But, God has established these relationships. What do the scriptures say about God’s providence and complaints?

Elihu’s rebuke to Job rebukes me. "Why do you complain against Him That He does not give an account of all His doings?” Job 33:13

With this judgment, I speak Job’s words of weakness to God. "Behold, I am insignificant; what can I reply to You? I lay my hand on my mouth.” Job 40:4

Although life can be difficult, I should rejoice in what God has laid before me. Doing the laundry, the vacuuming, and the dishes… while studying, reading, and learning… in the relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. Will I keep this commandment perfectly? No. For as Paul says in Romans 7:15, “For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate.” But I will by the grace of God “[fight] the good fight of faith” knowing the Jesus Christ will be the one to set me free from the “body of this death.” Therefore, my brothers and sisters, "Consider it all joy." Soli Deo Gloria.

Camp: Why are we here?

Of course, the ultimate goal of camp is to glorify God. To this end, the theme of this year's camp was "Serving Others in a Self-Serve World."

For the first time in 18 years, I did not have to attend school today. Wow, what a change. It's strange that I'm not cracking the books, writing my notes, and studying every morning. But, today instead, I was able to finish a children's book, work at dad's office, clean the kitchen, cook dinner, and spontaneously agree to help with Cindy's kids and babysit Atticus. God is good! I've missed this flexibility these past 4 years. And now that I see that accomplishment of my formal education, I think that I've been greatly blessed.

Learning to be a good homemaker includes deciding what skills you need (or would be beneficial) to acquire... And being a strange girl. I wanted to try soap making.

Added by the Homestead Blessings DVD, and with the supplies of a friend (Thanks Mrs. S!), the girls and I set to work. After all, any excuse to get together will do.

We measured our ingredients carefully.

And wore rubber gloves...

And at last, it was time to mix!

We poured it into pans...
And tapped out the bubbles...

And even cut it into bars. Wahoo! A job well done.

Can't wait to see how it turns out! Next up: French Mill. :) Coffee soap, anyone?

Line up happens before meal time... each tribe assembles, and Mr. A judges each tribe for points and the honor of going first into the dining hall.

Each tribe also has their own color...

Red for prophets...

Blue for Kings...

And Green for Priests...
Which the tribes display proudly. :)

After figuring out which cabin you're in.... You are assigned to a tribe... Either: Prophets, Priests, or Kings. :) (Of course, the counselors have their own tribe....)

Each tribe elects a chief, sagamore, and a sagaless. Then at the first campfire, Monday night, we have initiation. Generally, the more ruinous the better. Last year was water and flour. Translated: a paste that never seems to come off. :P Yuck!

This year.... An egg toss. Sorry, no pictures!

And a pudding fling... The sagamore was blindfolded and given a bowl of pudding with marshmallows and a spoon. The chief stood opposite. Goal: Fling pudding (and marshmallows) into the chief's mouth. Most in two minutes wins!

Some of our chiefs came out covered! As did the spectators... but I suspect Larry threw pudding into the crowd on purpose. :P

Then came perhaps the loudest initiation of all... The sagaless(es) had an egg wrapped in hosiery tied on their head... and the sagamore(s) were blindfolded (again) and instructed to break the egg with their noodle! Go!

Several CHEWV conferences ago, my dad bought Summit ministries worldview curriculum: Understanding the Times. This, combined with a general love for conferences, created our family conference.

"What", you ask, "is a family conference?" Don't worry. You're not the first to ask me that question. My father (and the rest of us) took a week off from the office... and pursued a course of study. Mornings started with devotions and breakfast. Study to begin at 8:30am. We read chapters in the textbook, essays in the student manual, watched lectures, and generally discussed worldview issues all week long. Theology, Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, Law, Ethics, Biology, Politics, History, and Economics were the subjects whirling and colliding in our minds.

We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ... 2 Corinthians 10:5

With 4 hours a day devoted to study, we made it through three units: Introduction, Theology, and Philosophy. I LOVED it. It strengthened my faith and aided me in analyzing the "Big 6" worldviews (which, of course, included my own): Christianity, Islam, Secular Humanism, Marxism-Leninism, Cosmic Humanism, and Postmodernism.

And there MUST be a silly photo! :)

See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ. Colossians 2:8

I did not agree with everything Summit Ministries proposed, but I would definitely recommend their curriculum to anyone desiring a holistic worldview program.

Have you ever had volunteers? Plants that spring up without your labor?

We have.

Out in front, amongst our hostas, a watermelon vine has sprung up... A random seed? Spit from last year's melons?

God's goodness is evident even in creation! We'll soon be enjoying yummy fruit!

Beach Trip: Part 5 of 5 -- "Dance, Dance, Yeah!"

Despite traffic, hunger, and various other obstacles... we made it. A homeschool graduation party with contra dancing, what could be better?! It was a perfect end to our trip.

Not only did the girls and I travel up from HH, but Mr. Kincell, Mrs. Kincell, Patrick, Daniel, and Josh came down...

It was nice to see old friends...

And make new ones.

These homeschool students from the south caught on quickly. I was really impressed!

Their eager, excited faces could be seen all around. :)

I hope we get the opportunity to see our new friends again.

Isn't it encouraging to see more young men and young women who love homeschooling?

Beach Trip: Part 4 of 5 -- "Whadaya talkin' about?"

Perhaps the best thing about being with my girlfriends is the encouraging conversations...

But all good things must end... And we packed the car.

Some of we really tired... and some played with the laptop

Some of us were ready to drive...

And some of us were just plain silly. :)

But there was one more stop to make...

Beachy Trip: Part 3 of 5 -- "I'm Starving!"

I LOVE Lucky Charms. Whew. Okay, I admitted it. Isn't that the first step... or is it the last... Acceptance? Anyway, when you're going to the beach, you need food. Lucky Charms was pretty high on my list. But, you can't eat it for dinner.

My chums and I (being responsible girls :) packed lots of food...

Yummy!

Of course, clearly labeled... In case we forgot: "Beach Food"

But, what would this trip be without a trip to Piggly Wiggly?!

Arnold Palmer tea? Oh yeah. I'm a golfer's granddaughter. And it shows. None of the other girls even knew who A.P. is... GASP! :P

By the end of the trip, we were definitely "Big on the Pig."

I had never tried this frozen desert before. Delicious.

So delicious, that we had to visit Rita's twice. Therefore, the statement below is accurate. :P
