Lab before Spring Break

The Friday before Spring Break, my good friend Bissi had the clever plan to watch a movie... Especially since there were no students around. Huzzah! Being a kind fellow, he brought several films for me to choose from.
With The Dark Knight as one of the selections, it's not hard to guess what I chose. Putting the movie up on the projector screens, we settled down to enjoy a few hours with Gotham's anti-hero.
I do love comic book lore. In many ways, it is the mythology of modern times.
It's also a great way to spend a lazy, open lab Friday with a friend.

And with the Rain

It is a beautiful day to walk in the rain... And enjoy God's creation. A perfect time to meet with God in prayer.

Quote of the Day

People are like diamonds each aspect of their personality being another facet of the jewel. - Daniel Powell

The Application of Scripture

My current bible study with the InterVarsity ministry group is becoming such a blessing to me. Meeting with fellow believers to study the scripture is a gift. Even if we don't always agree, the discussion helps to grow in the Lord.

We follow the method of inductive bible study... We make observations, ask questions, search the scriptures for answers, and then try to apply what we have learned. This last step always seems to be the most tricky.

It is so easy while reading God's word to become self-focused, self-motivated, self-indulging. We must always remind ourselves the reason of our existence. The Westminster Shorter Catechism states, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." It is so easy to read the bible as a how-to book - a simple morality lesson. But, doesn't the gospel come first? Isn't the fact that Jesus lived a perfect life, died for the elect, and rose again -- All to bring worshipers to the feet of God -- our first lesson? The WWJD trap is always looming. The tendency to ask "What would Jesus do" in my situation... The inward and relative question. Rather than looking to the scriptures and reading -- WDJD -- What DID Jesus do. However, the application of God's word is very important. God tells us that we should bear fruit... As James reminds us, "Faith without works is dead." Where can we learn how to live rightly? The Bible. But can we live rightly without first recognizing the purpose of the scriptures?

I am always worried about the application -- that I'll only see myself, rather than the big picture -- I'll use the scripture as a "life for dummies", instead of the inspired Word of God. Does anyone else struggle with this?

A reminder for us all

"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when {people} insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty {again?} It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden nor does {anyone} light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
Matthew 5:10-16

Pre-Dance Practice Pictures

The ball planning committee -- plus a few friends -- met today to figure out some new dances. Laughing and joking about ourselves, we all managed to work through the sets. I can't wait till tomorrow night's practice!

Children are a Blessing from the Lord

God is so good to my home church. We have so many little ones; it is such a great gift to be able to watch over them.

*The bonus of watching Daniel wrestle with them is too fun!

The Abduction Club

When Shaela C. wrote on Facebook that she was watching the "BEST chick flick ever", my interest was piqued. Being a girl and never having watched the “BEST chick flick ever” was simply not to be born! I wasted no time in finding The Abduction Club on YouTube. I was pleased and excited to find another movie I would love to add to my collection.

The younger sons in England have a terrible problem. They will inherit no estates; they are forced to either earn a living or marry a lady of property and wealth. Our leading men, Burns and Strand, are some just young men who lack an estate. Being men of low ambition, they join the Abduction Club. As members, they help one another kidnap eligible young ladies and ask them to wed. What follows is a delightful romp in absurdity and hilarity.

The kidnappers are pursued around the country by the jealous rival, Mr. Power, and the English redcoats. The ladies are a trial by themselves. Anne is delighted to be away from Mr. Power, while Catherine keeps trying to escape. All the while, Burns is trying to woo Catherine to his side. Strand just wants to convince Anne that he isn’t predictable. Not to mention that a ruffian has made them wanted for murder…

Despite Burns’ and Strand’s selfish beginning, we see them grow into men of honor and character. The two young ladies who are cursed (perhaps blessed?) to find themselves kidnapped are humbled and are formed into sacrificing women.

This story is undoubtedly absurd. There is no doubt about it. However, I found myself lost in the story. The kidnaps of the ladies, the chases by the soldiers, the escapes from the horrid Mr. Power, the duel, and final ending all thrilled me. If you need a diversion that is frivolous, but nonetheless endearing find The Abduction Club on YouTube. Or if you’re brave enough… buy a copy from Ebay. I don’t think you’ll regret it.
